You Are Not Alone

YANA is a non-profit society founded here in the Comox Valley and exclusive to the local School District #71. The Society was founded by the Williams family. They suddenly found themselves traveling to Vancouver when their child fell seriously ill. Their first hand experience with the stresses and huge costs involved was overwhelming. Ferry cost, accommodation in Vancouver, meals, gas - while still having the pressure of supporting a home and the rest of their family while being away. From that experience YANA came to be - they wanted to make sure that other parents would not have to experience the same stress and costs they went through. YANA’s mandate is to financially help families who have a child that needs to travel away from the Comox Valley for medical treatment due to illness or injury. Children up to nineteen years of age (including high risk pregnancies) who live in School District # 71 qualify for this assistance. Most families are ill prepared when their child is being airlifted to Vancouver or they go into premature labor and have been transferred to Victoria. YANA maintains four fully furnished apartments in Vancouver for the exclusive use of these families. These apartments are seldom empty. Often families are placed by YANA in hotels if an apartment is not available or if their treatment destination is elsewhere. With the ever-increasing demand on our medical system, more and more families rely on YANA when their children must leave the Comox Valley for medical treatment for their children. Most families are not financially able to run two households and YANA believes that when a child is ill or injured, the whole family needs looking after and that it is important that they stay together. We fund hundreds of separate trips out of town each year. We also provide emergency funds at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox. Since it’s inception in 1986, demand has grown substantially each year. Fundraising events are ongoing and incredibly, many individuals and businesses fundraise for us on their own initiative. We could not continue to provide this service without the generosity of our community.
