1000x5 is a recycling program in which gently used books are prepared for distribution to identified pre-schoolers in the Comox Valley. Books suitable for 0-5 years are collected in schools and pre-schools from Miracle Beach to Hornby Island, and brought to a dedicated room at Courtenay Elementary School, where volunteers, sort, clean, level and package books. Attractive packages of 3 books are distributed to social agencies, which have identified vulnerable children and families in need of literacy support. The program is based on research that has established that pre-schoolers who have been exposed to 1000 books by the time they are 5 have enhanced chances for success at school. The program also supports the value of each child having his/her own personal library.
